Dr. Michelle McKenzie, Owner

Dr. Michelle grew up in Gretna, Louisiana and studied business and pre-veterinary medicine at the University of New Orleans before attending Louisiana State Univerisry School of Veterinary Medicine where she graduated in 2007.

After graduating vet school, Dr. Michelle worked at a veterinary hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana. In attempt to get closer to home, she worked part time in Watson, Louisiana and spent some time practicing emergency medicine in Laplace before taking over the position of medical director of a local no-kill animal shelter in St. Tammany Parish.

Since 2010, she has lived on the northshore with her three kids, Emilia, Liam and Evelyn. They share their house with their three rescue dogs, Scout (Great Dane), Legacy (Poodle-Pomeranian mix), and Louis (Golden Retriever). Their two cats, George (16yo) and Little Bit (19yo) enjoy the calmness of living out their senior years as clinic cats.

In October 2015, Dr. Michelle purchased Gause Boulevard Veterinary Hospital, when its original owner, Dr Milazo retired. She has thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of the clients who have entrusted the care of their pets to our hospital for years as well as all the new clients who have joined our veterinary family since 2015.

Since taking over, she has focused on improving the quality of care of our patients, making sure both our patients and our clients feel at home. Dr. Michelle enjoys taking the time to help pets feel more comfortable by reducing hospital-associated anxiety using pheromones, food rewards, music therapy and positive reinforcement. She is always encouraging our clients to bring their pets by “just to get a treat” so they can form pleasant memories of our hospital.

Dr. Michelle feels it’s important that our clients understand what is happening with their pets. She enjoys teaching and educating both our clients and our staff.
In her spare time, she relaxes by fishing, crafting, and making memories with her kids. Dr. Michelle is a Girl Scout troop leader and enjoys taking her troop camping a few times each year. She even helps plan camping trips for all the troops in her area.
